Today I saw something truly beautiful.
An elderly couple were crossing the road outside my work, she was clearly sick and very weak on her feet, as she struggled down the curb her husband lifted her off her feet and across the road. She didn’t have the strength so he found it for her.
They both must have been well into their 80′s, and while he didn’t look like he was in the best health himself he took all his might to help her cross.
It made me realise something, that is the kind of love we should be searching for. Not the unbridled passion in both love and hate that the movies thrust in our faces, not the sheer lust that so many people mistake as love, but the true, undying, hold your hand through the hardest times, L.O.V.E, love.
Surely that’s the dream? To find somebody who has the strength to carry you when you’re too weak to carry yourself? That one person who won’t be there to pick you up when you fall, but to stop you falling at all.
I think it’s an amazing love that can endure a lifetime, a love that doesn’t fade as you lose your looks, your body and your flexibility. A love that doesn’t run away at the first signs of a flaw, or hide through the hard times.
Surely if you can find somebody to love you like that nothing else matters?
Any of you who have found that person who will carry you across that road when you need it in life, I hope you know how lucky you are. Go and kiss that person, tell them you love them, and appreciate them.
And for the rest of us? We’ll keep searching, but maybe we can look at that search a little different? There’s more to life and love than finding the best looking, best dressed, highest earning man…
